THE RABBITS ARE SOON TO BE FREE!!

The laboratory-grown human skin is now so good that it can replace the lab testing animals! This is good news both for the animals and for us, since we now can be sure how medical and chemical materials actually reacts on and with our skin in stead of a rabbit or a rat for instance. An organization that is, among other things, providing guidelines to its 32-member countries on methods to assess chemical safety, have now approved three variants of laboratory-grown human skin for chemical testing.

From SciAm:
[It comes] from normal human skin cells, which are cultured in specialized media to form a three-dimensional reconstruction of the real thing ... [that] closely resembles intact human skin both structurally and biochemically. It consists of multiple layers of cells and has a stratum corneum, the dead layer of cells on the surface that provides a protective barrier. These properties make it amenable for use in toxicity testing.

I just love how the world goes forward, and how technology and science makes the world a better place!
